Ba Zi Compatibility: How Two Charts Are Compared

Ba Zi compatibility, also called Chinese astrology compatibility or Sheng Xiao He, compares two charts rather than judging one in isolation. The comparison normally has three parts: how the two Day Masters relate to each other, whether the Five Elements of one chart supply what the other chart lacks, and whether the charts' favourable elements can be brought together in daily life.

The relationship between the two Day Masters

This is the core of any compatibility reading. Day Masters that generate each other tend to be mutually supportive. Day Masters that control each other bring structure and boundaries. Day Masters that clash — the same element in opposing polarity, or elements that overcome one another — produce attraction and friction at the same time.

Day Masters that are identical (Peer relationship) are familiar to each other but can compete over the same resources.

Whether the charts supply each other

Each chart is usually short of some element and heavy in others. When one chart's surplus element is exactly what the other chart's favourable elements call for, the pairing works better in practice than the Day Master relationship alone suggests.

This is also why practitioners consider lifestyle rather than only the chart: shared activity, shared home arrangement and shared timing can effectively 'supply' an element that is missing.

What a compatibility reading covers

A full reading usually addresses the Day Master pair, the elemental balance across both charts, the favourable elements of each, the interaction of the two Luck Cycles over time, and the traditional advice for marriage timing.

It is worth noting what it cannot do: a chart cannot remove disagreement. It describes patterns and timing, which is a different claim from prediction.

Frequently asked questions

What is Ba Zi compatibility?
The comparison of two Ba Zi charts, usually covering the relationship between the two Day Masters, the elemental balance across both charts, and the timing of shared Luck Cycles.
What does it mean if our Day Masters clash?
It usually indicates strong attraction combined with recurring friction — differences in temperament and priorities that need to be managed consciously rather than avoided.
Is compatibility about the elements or the Day Masters?
Both, and the Day Master relationship is checked first because it is the most personal layer. The elemental balance between the two charts then modifies the picture.
Can compatibility readings be wrong?
They are interpretations of a traditional system, not scientific measurements, so different schools can reach different conclusions from the same chart.
This guide explains a traditional Chinese cultural practice and is provided for reference and cultural interest. It is not scientific, and nothing here is medical, financial, legal or other professional advice. For a free chart of your own, see the free Ba Zi chart.
